I spent the better part of today taking care of a worker that hurt his thumb. Without getting into detail it was bad but could have been worse.
We hold safety meetings every single day we work. Tons of resources and money are spent on these meetings. Safety is truly a priority to the client and to the company. So why do we still have incidents where someone gets hurt?
First off let me tell you that I know safety has come a long long way over the past 10-20 years. Companies really do care if workers are safe and are being safe while they work. Next I believe it is the time spent in these daily meetings and all the time spent when something does happen finding out what caused it and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. I spent 2 hours in a meeting with 12 guys, management level guys, today over this workers injured thumb. There had to be some money spent to hold that meeting!
We can be safe 100% of the time if we take the time to do so. We can also live the Golden Rule 100% of the time if we take the time, invest the time, into doing it!
