Something to Give

Posted on March 29, 2011

How do we create meaningful relationships? Have you ever wondered about that? Any kind of relationship, whether it be meeting a stranger or strengthening a marriage. What is it that makes the relationship meaningful?

Lyrics from Coldplay’s song, “Swallowed in the Sea” offer some good advice:

“Oh what good is it to live with nothing left to give,
Forget, but not forgive, not loving all you see?”

I believe the answer to creating a meaningful relationship is giving. It is so easy to be selfish and to feel a sense of entitlement in our relationships. We somehow think that our lack of more meaningful relationships with others in our lives is someone else’s fault. “People just aren’t nice anymore,” we may think. The problem is that if we wait for the perfect relationships to come along, we will find that life is not as good when we are not giving.

Want to make meaningful relationships? Give. Start looking for what you can offer others instead of what they can give you. You’ll find that a life filled with friendships is much better to live.
