Coincidence that people who READ good books are GOOD?

Posted on February 24, 2010

What is it about a good book? Joseph Addison wisely wrote, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” Perhaps this is true. Let me share a story to illustrate my point.

Just the other day, I called in to a movie rental store with a question about a movie that was made from a book I had recently read. The young employee I spoke with on the phone was surprisingly different. He was kind and more than helpful. As I asked him about the movie, he knew it. I asked if he had read the book, to which he replied that he definitely had. “Is it a coincidence,” I thought to myself, “that he has read this book, and that he treats me this way?”

I do not believe it was a coincidence, and for this reason, the reading of good books is something that we at Life’s Golden Rule strongly advocate. As a member, your Daily Email will most always contain a quote from a book, a book you can then buy, if you like, here in our bookstore.

Principles of Life’s Golden Rule are to be found in great books. As we read, we are introduced to proper thoughts about life – how to make it fulfilling and meaningful.

John Locke said, “Reading furnishes the mind only with materials for knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” Through the quotes and books offered through our bookstore, you can become acquainted with the materials needed for your learning. Then through thought and reflection of those materials, that learning does become our own. This process changes our view of ourselves, those around us, and life in general. As we further educate ourselves through this process, we learn the truth of how to be happy by living Life’s Golden Rule.

Fill your mind, today and every day, with correct thought and, as a result, your actions will follow.
