Because I Have Been Given Much

Posted on July 22, 2009

The lyrics of the hymn, Because I Have Been Given Much was written by Grace Noll Crowell. I listened to the hymn in church this last Sunday and I knew that it needed to be in one of our Daily Lessons.

Because I have been given much, I too must give.

Because of thy great bounty, Lord each day I live.

I shall divide my gifts from thee with every brother that I see,

who has the need of help from me.

Because I have been sheltered, fed by thy good care…

I cannot see another’s lack and I not share-

my glowing fire, my loaf of bread-my roof’s safe shelter over head,

that he too may be comforted.

Because I have been blessed by thy great love dear Lord,

I’ll share thy love again according to thy word.

I shall give love to those in need. I’ll show that love by word and deed,

thus shall my thanks be thanks indeed.

When we count our blessings and see all that God has given us, we feel the need to share it with others. Whether it be money, food, shelter, or love, everything we have is a blessing from God. When we see others lacking we want to share the gifts that God has given us. When we feel of God’s Love, we want to share that love with others and show it in our actions. As you go throughout your day today, think of all the things that God has given you, and think about how you can share those blessings with others. That is truly The Golden Rule.

I woke up this morning with this hymn running through my mind. We haven’t sung it recently in Church, so I knew the only reason for it to be in mind is because of how truly blessed I feel, especially over the past few weeks. I have a loving family, good health, a great job and wonderful friends. I know that all of these blessings come from my Father in Heaven, and that they collectively pale in comparison to the greatest blessing of all: the atonement by my elder brother Jesus Christ for all of my sins and shortcomings, of which there are many.

Since I know how blessed I truly am, when I saw this comment box felt that I should share this with whoever might read it and feel encouraged to share their gratitude here as well. I honestly try to share my bounteous blessings with others, mostly at the initiative of my wonderful wife for whom such sharing comes more naturally than it does for me, and I pledge to continue to do so and to improve both the quality and quantity of such sharing. Are the words to this great hymn in the public domain. If they are not in the public domain where do I go to get permission to use the words?

Recently our ward has been on the kick that people are too emotionally depedent…that we need to be self reliant and not seek counsel so much.. that we need to stand on our own.

This song instantly came to mind as I prayed about the new direction our ward is going… and I have decided that for me and my house… we will err on the side of giving and compassion because if it is given with pure intentions – it will only bless the lives of those we reach out to and also bless our own life.

    Thank you for your post.

Glad to hear from you Marie. You are right in the part that you said “it will only bless the lives of those we reach out to and also bless our own life.” We say that you will also bless many more lives than you will ever know. See

These posts show how one act or many acts can ripple to generations or to other people that we might never know or see the fruit of our own actions.

    Good luck with your resolve.

The greatest gift of all is forgiveness. Therefore. I must also forgive.

I will be giving a talk this evening at my singles wards. I am a ward missionary and I have been asked to share why I love to do missionary work. This song was the first thing that came into my head. I have been blessed in every aspect of my life. I was even blessed when I didn’t even deserve it. When I see others going through a difficult time or are need of a service, I want to be the one to help. I too want to give because I have received so much! Thanks for all your testimonies, I really appreciate:)

Love this hymn, I know and testify that my father in
Heaven loves me and blesses me everyday!
I have had the great blessing of knowing without
A doubt that we are in a foreign place here on earth
And that I have felt the feeling of home and
all I can say is it feels like every great feeling
Rolled up in one awesome feeling and I felt homesick
Experiencing my personal revelation! Love the gospel
Love the lord, love my family!

Love some of you stories. Will have to look around some more to see what you all have here.
