What are Words?
Let’s look at what makes a word. Words are made up of letters, and letters are nothing but symbols. Yet, we combine these symbols into words and words into sentences that become tools a writer can use to convey thoughts and ideas to a reader. These thoughts and ideas can then invoke feelings in the reader, and hopefully these feelings can alter the reader’s behavior.
Have you ever noticed that you can “feel” the attitude of a writer in his or her writing? You can tell if they were in a hurry to just finish, or if their work was deliberately crafted to optimize the experience of the reader – if they had passion, or if they really didn’t believe what they were writing.
The writer obviously does have some responsibility to “think about” what they are writing. But what about the reader? We, the reader, only learn from written words if we can grasp the ideas or feelings of the writer and then apply them to our own thoughts and our own feelings. . . . .
So what does this have to do with living The Golden Rule? How does this help us “Do Unto Others?”
Examples of living The Golden Rule are found everywhere in literature. We at Life’s Golden Rule encourage you to “read” (which means thinking, feeling, and applying) out of the best books.
We also hope that our Daily Lessons are not just words made of symbols, but that they are causing reflection and emotion that motivate you to better your life and the lives of others around you by living The Golden Rule.
